Contribute Your Ideas For The New U.I.C.A.

The UICA (Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts) recently had the great news that our Grand Rapids City Commission gave approval to the $34 million project of a new UICA home to be built on the city-owned parcel at the intersection of Fulton Street and Division Avenue – at Grand Rapids’ emerging “Avenue of the Arts.”

The new UICA home is expected to open in 2010.  Developer Sam Cummings, president of Second Story Properties, plans to break ground this spring or summer.  This project involves a 325,000 square-foot, mixed-use building with retail space, 66 apartments, and a 262-space parking structure.

UICA is a multicultural institution and with its new facility, hopes to expand its current popular programs such as:

  • Alternative films series
  • Urban Clay Studio
  • ArtWorks job training program for youth 14 to 21 years old
  • 25 art exhibits each season.

UICA wants to present new amenities such as:

  • A multipurpose, black-box theatre
  • A gift shop
  • A rooftop patio and sculpture garden

You are invited to contribute your ideas for the new U.I.C.A. and its functions and events.  Your input will be given to the Jeffrey Meeuwsen, Executive Director and the developer, Sam Cummings.

What activitites would you love to have at U.I.C.A.?

What types of exhibits would you go to see at UICA?

What types of retail businesses would you like at this mixed-use project? Which ones would fit in with Avenure of the Arts? What entrepreneurial businesses could really take off in this new project?

Think of the different generations and what each might really enjoy at this new setting.

Taking into consideration the types of people who might like to rent the apartments planned for this mixed-use project, what do you think is important to have in those apartments?

What would be a "real draw" for the roof top patio?

What would you love to see in in the rooftop sculpture garden?

How could our city's wonderfully diverse cultures be utilized in this new mixed-uses project?

Which areas of the visual arts and the performing arts would you like to see at UICA?
